How to find the best DJ equipment

Have you ever been at a club listening to the music while thinking "I can do this much better than this DJ"? Being a DJ can turn out to be a lucrative pastime if you know your stuff. It is also one of those hobbies that you can do after hours, so if you are just starting out, there is no need to quit your day job just yet.

One of the things you should know is that your DJ equipment is your most important tool. While it can be an expensive exercise to buy all the tools at once, shop around to make sure you get the best possible equipment your money can buy. Unfortunately, you will most likely compromise on sound quality if you only buy the cheapest equipment on the market. On the other hand, the best equipment in the world would not be able to help you if you don't have any talent or feeling for the music.

Start by making a list of all the DJ equipment you need. Basic equipment you should look at is two turntables, two slipmats, two cartridges, one mixer and a set of headphones. To get an idea of the type of equipment on the market and the general prices, start with an internet search. This allows you to browse through the equipment available without the pressure of a shop assistant (who probably knows less than you do about the equipment) following you around impatiently. A lot of internet shops also offer better prices (and free delivery) because they are able to eliminate an enormous amount of overheads. Use this to your advantage.

If the equipment is going to be used in several locations, buy equipment that would be easy to carry and transport. You should also speak to fellow DJ's about their experiences and the type of DJ equipment they would recommend. When comparing equipment, always keep the sound quality issue in the back of your mind.
