How to Choose the Best Turntable For You

How to select the top turntable...Really depends on your cash flow and what you intend to use it for.  The gigging DJ will have different criteria than the home enthusiast.  Lets view at several of the bells and whistles that have to to be considered.

What kind of drive mechanism does it have? There are two basic types.  Direct drive and belt drive.  The belt drive is really more useful to home use.  A DJ however will normally opt for the direct drive due to the fact that the motor connects in direct fashion to the record platter and provides the best torque.  Stops and starts are nearly immediate.  Belt drives have a tendancy to become slack over time and can affect the pitch.  Particularly when a turntable is put through the tortures a DJ would put it through.  Because of the fact that the drive is immediately beneath the plater in direct drive turntables, they are given to be a little noisier than belt drives.  While this may be acceptable at the club where there is a lot of ambient noise anyway, home enthusiasts might find it annoying.  Of the two, direct drives are more expensive.

Is it USB compatible? USB turntables make it quick toconnect them directly to your computer and by way of the included software program change your old vinyl to mp3 files.  DJ's and home users as well progit from this technology.  Although if this is not important to you, there are turntables which do not have this feature.  Those that do not can always record analog out of the turntable to analog in on the computer as another option.

Price.  There is a fair range of sticker prices for turntables, with some of the DJ versions topping out a $1000 or more.  Consumer models may be found for $100.  Just depends on your wants and how much you want to spend.  You get what you pay for ultimately.

Pitch Control. DJ's will find the models with variable pitch control priceless in cueing up and synching the timeing of tunes.  Not likely not a big feature in home use, but stranger things have happened.

Forward and reverse.  Again another cool function useful for DJ effects.  But who knows.  Some home users may want to know what the Beatles really said on some of their tunes that used "backward masking". Now you can!

Automatic start and stop. Some turntables provide automatic start and stop.  The stop feature really eliminates wear and tear on the mechanisms because it stops when it gets to the end of the record.  DJ's probably won't use this feature much because they never get to the end of the record.  They merely keep looping!

Construction.  Obviously some turntables are more suitable for gig use than others.  Home users likely won't care much, except if your spouse is one of those who needs to endlessly rearrange the furniture.  If you DJ and transport equipment to your gigs you will want a road tested base and cover and a stabilizing mechanism on the tone arm.  A word to the wise...

Speed. Turntables run at 33 1/3, 45, and 78 rpm. Make sure you have all three options, or there may be some things you can't play.

Conclusion. Seems the sound of vinyl has never quite gone out of style.  The turntable you use to play it on will be greatly decided by your cash flow and how you intend to use it.  DJ's will want certain options, while home users will want something else.  Some options may be desirable to both.  Only you can decide!  More information can be found here.
