What Happens When A New Version Of Serato Comes Out?

One common concern that people considering purchasing the Rane TTM-57sl mixer have is,

"What happens when a new version of Serato comes out?

Am I going to have to buy a new Mixer?

Am I going to have to pay for the new software?

What if my Serato burns out or my Mixer burns out, do I have to replace the whole thing like my old crappy TV/DVD player?"

There are all great questions so we'll address them one at a time.

1. What happens when a new version of Serato comes out?

Although its easy to panic about changes like this, it is important to understand that absolutely nothing will happen to you when a new version of Serato software is released. It will not make your Serato Scratch Live software stop working, you will not notice any changes while DJing, you may not even know that a new version has been released!

Therefore, the answer to the next question -

2. Am I going to have to buy a new Mixer?

Is unquestionably, "No." Each version of Serato Scratch Live software is built to be compatible with ALL previous Rane Serato hardware, including the Serato SL-1, Serato SL-3, Rane TTM-57sl, and more recently, Rane Sixty-Eight. Rane is known for releasing products that stand the test of time and it is ludicrous to think that they'd make you buy new hardware just to use the latest version of its accompanying software.

When you buy a Rane product, you can expect to use it for many years.

3. Ok. That's great. But am I going to have to buy new Rane Software every time there's update?

Nope. Serato Scratch Live software is completely free.

As a matter of fact, you NEVER have to purchase Serato Scratch Live software. Even if you don't own a single Rane/Serato product, you can still download SSL at the link above. The software is completely free. The only thing you pay for is the hardware interface, which you need to DJ with the software (otherwise, it basically works like iTunes).

4. What if my Serato on my Rane TTM-57sl burns out? What about the mixer? Do I have to replace the whole thing like my old crappy TV/DVD player?

This is an interesting question that gets asked frequently on forums. However, before addressing it, let's be clear about one thing, Rane products do not "burn out." I know you're thinking, "but, doesn't everything burn out?" No. Magnets never burn out. In general comparing the Rane TTM-57 to a lightbulb, or your TV/DVD player is not an effective comparison. The same way that Technics turntables are built like tanks and are primarily powered by magnets, so is the Rane TTM-57sl as well as all of Rane's other mixers and they generally do not contain parts that are prone to "eventual failure" (unless you caused serious damage to the parts inside).

Ok, now that we have that cleared up. Strictly hypothetically speaking, if some part of your TTM-57 malfunctions, if you purchased it from and Authorized Rane dealer, you have a 2-year factory warranty that covers problems like this (3 years if you send in your registration card, so DO IT!). Rane is very good about keeping their customers happy, so they're not going to try to pull a fast one on you and not honor their warranty. As long as you don't go punting your Rane TTM-57sl, or take it scuba diving, or take it upon yourself to test the 57s durability while falling out of windows, you'll probably never experience a single problem with your Rane TTM-57sl, and if you do, Rane will be behind you all the way.
